Panopto

Overview

Panopto is Virginia Tech’s chosen video content management system and video creation tool that allows users to create, share, and manage video content easily. 

Panopto is integrated into Virginia Tech’s Canvas platform, allowing instructors to record, upload, and share videos directly within Canvas. Panopto also provides tools for organizing  videos, editing videos, tracking video engagement, and creating interactivity through video quizzes.

    Panopto Editor provides a streamlined, browser-based environment for modifying and enhancing recordings without requiring separate video editing software.

    Panopto Recorder allows instructors to capture multiple sources simultaneously, such as slides, screen activity, webcam video, and audio.

    Panopto Webcasting allows instructors to broadcast live video sessions to audiences while simultaneously recording the event for later viewing.

  • Record from desktop, laptop, tablets, phone, or classroom capture system.

  • Upload and organize videos into course folders.

  • Embed videos directly in Canvas modules, pages, and assignments.

  • View analytics (who watched, how long, interaction points).

  • Generate and edit automatic captions.

  • Create self-grading quizzes inside of videos with grade passback to Canvas.

  • Control video permissions at a folder or individual level.

  • Reuse and copy content between semesters.

  • Allows for student created video assignments.

General Information

Panopto videos are typically accessed through Canvas. Students do not need separate accounts; access is tied to their VT login credentials.

  • Take notes that can be private, downloaded, and/or shared.

  • Create and submit videos through the Panopto tool for Canvas assignments with the submission type: text entry.

How to Access

Instructor: Log into Canvas, navigate to a site, and select Panopto Video. If Panopto Video is not enabled in your menu, see How do I manage Course Navigation links?

Student: Log into Canvas, navigate to a site, and select Panopto Video. If Panopto Video is not enabled in your menu, an instructor in the course must enable it first.
