About the Pilot
This pilot provides access to a conversational generative AI (Gen AI) interface to up to 500 full-time university employees and graduate assistants selected for the pilot. The pilot launched in spring 2025, and has been extended through the 2026 calendar year. There is no promise of continued access after 2026.
Participants may be granted either base level access or advanced level access under OpenAI’s new credit-based system. Base access includes features that do not require credits, while advanced access includes additional features that require a limited, replenishing credit allowance.
Benefits
Access: Pilot participants receive access to ChatGPT Edu for the 2026 calendar year. ChatGPT Edu offers technical and administrative features similar to ChatGPT Enterprise. Participants may be granted either base or advanced access to the platform. Access level is assigned based on a combination of factors including availability, role, use case, and alignment to university strategic initiatives.
Training & Support: Pilot participants will receive training on ChatGPT functionality and responsible uses of Gen AI, as well as technical support and consultations.
Requirements
Active status as a VT employee or GA/GTA/GRA.
Active status in the ChatGPT Edu Instance. Access may be removed if a participant is inactive for 60 days or more.
Feedback: Pilot participants may be asked to complete feedback surveys and should be willing to participate in other activities, including interviews, usability studies, and focus groups.
Training & Security: Pilot participants must adhere to ChatGPT Edu responsible usage and security guidelines.
