Training & Tools

TLOS offers avenues of learning for faculty in all disciplines. Learn tools and strategies to enhance teaching, research, and productivity. Then build connections with colleagues by sharing your expertise.

How do you learn best?

We strive to improve learning by fostering faculty digital fluency and contemporary practice through our tool finder site, workshops, tutorials, accessible technologies support, and communities. Find out below about how each of these approaches can help you.

Tool Finder

Explore the tools available in Virginia Tech’s digital learning ecosystem to discover ways to include them in courses. Sort the tool cards by categories and select a tool card to learn more about how the tool can be used to enhance teaching and learning. This tool is in Phase 1 testing.

Workshops

Our free professional development opportunities foster the integration of technology in teaching, learning, research, and daily activities for Virginia Tech faculty, staff, and graduate students with the goal of enhancing digital fluency and improving teaching and learning.

Tutorials

TLOS supports self-paced learning through Canvas courses and through the library of video tutorials at LinkedIn Learning. We also maintain a variety of technology tutorials and troubleshooting guides in the 4Help Knowledge Base and on our TLOS: On Demand site.

LinkedIn Learning

The LinkedIn Learning training library offers more than 17,000 on-demand courses and learning paths designed to help users gain new skills and knowledge.

4Help Knowledge Base

The Virginia Tech 4help Knowledge Base is a collection of how-to and troubleshooting guides to help you find answers to questions and solve problems.

TLOS: On Demand

An alternative way to participate in professional development is through asynchronous, go-at-your-own-pace, online training. We understand that face-to-face training may not always fit your busy schedule, so TLOS offers On-Demand training initiatives. These on-demand trainings will give you the opportunity to enhance your skills and engage in topics that the Professional Development Network doesn’t normally offer.

Accessible Technologies Support

The Accessible Technologies team offers support to faculty and staff seeking to use assistive technologies in classroom instruction or research for Section 508 or W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) compliance. Consulting services are also available to any university entity wanting to provide a disability accommodation, to support assistive technologies for any academic or administrative purpose, or to develop a better understanding about assistive technologies options.

Communities

Join one of our existing communities to collaborate and learn from your peers. Or contact us to propose a new learning community.

Instructional Design

Work with our team of learning technologies specialists and instructional designers to develop your courses.

Faculty Inquiry Groups

Join other faculty and staff members in a semester-long learning community that focuses on a specific topic or literature.

Computer Refresh Program

TLOS partners with the university’s colleges to provide full-time teaching faculty with new computers every four years. Each year, colleges are allocated a certain number of computers based on university census data and anticipated growth or attrition. Each college selects eligible faculty to participate in the program.
