Overview
The Microsoft 365 Accessibility Checker is available for the Microsoft 365 Suite on Microsoft 365, Windows, and macOS operating systems. Virginia Tech recommends our community members use the Accessibility Checker to make sure Microsoft Documents are accessible per VT Policy 7215 and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Actionable guidance for correcting contrast, headings, alt text, and reading order.
Supports creation of accessible teaching materials, exams, and lecture slides.
Helps ensure accessibility when submitting documents or presentations.
Builds awareness of inclusive design practices.
Encourages better formatting and structure in written assignments
Non-Microsoft file formats (e.g., PDF files not authored in Word or PowerPoint).
Collaborative review of accessibility by multiple editors simultaneously.
Only works within Microsoft 365 apps (Word, Excel, etc.).
Not a substitute for manual usability testing or user feedback.
Use Accessibility Checker before publishing course materials.
Train students to check their own assignments before submission.
Include accessibility requirements in rubrics or digital handouts.
Provides text explanations of issues and how to fix them.
Can be paired with screen readers and keyboard navigation.
Flags missing alt text, unclear link text, color contrast issues, and more.
General Information
Students can access the Accessibility Checker through the “Review” tab in Word, PowerPoint, or Excel. Issues are listed in a panel with explanations and tips.
