iClicker

Overview

iClicker is a student response system that promotes active learning through live polling, quizzes, and attendance tracking. Students can participate using physical remotes or the iClicker Student app.

iClicker is widely used at Virginia Tech to enhance classroom engagement and provide real-time feedback on student comprehension. Instructors can pose questions during lectures, and students can respond via mobile devices or iClicker remotes. The tool supports multiple question types, including multiple-choice, true/false, and short answer, making it a flexible option for various teaching styles.

 

Tool Features

  • Real-time polling and quizzes – Gauge student understanding and encourage participation during lectures.

  • Attendance tracking – Leverage automated attendance features, including options for GPS-based verification in the Student Mobile App. 

  • Canvas integration – Seamlessly sync student responses and grades with Canvas.

  • Multiple response options – Students can use either iClicker remotes or the iClicker Student app (mobile or web-based) for participation.

  • Conduct polls and quizzes in real time.

  • Track attendance automatically through GPS-based verification (for student mobile users).

  • Import or sync grades and participation records with Canvas.

  • Review student performance analytics to inform teaching strategies.

  • Participate using either a physical iClicker remote or the iClicker Student App (on mobile or the web).

  • Receive immediate feedback on responses.

  • Access recorded question history to review for exams.

  • In-depth written responses or essay-style questions.

  • Situations where reliable internet access is unavailable (for mobile or web users).

  • Anything beyond taking attendance requires that the student purchase an iClicker Student App subscription for the semester.

  • Use iClicker for formative assessments to check student understanding in real time.

  • Conduct live polling for classroom discussions.

  • Encourage active participation by using quizzes as interactive learning activities.

  • Use attendance tracking to monitor student engagement in large classes.

iClicker supports accessibility with features such as screen reader compatibility, keyboard navigation, and voice recognition software. Instructors should ensure that their questions and answer choices are accessible to all students, including those using assistive technologies. General Information

Students can participate using an iClicker remote or the iClicker Student app (mobile or web-based). Regardless of which option is chosen (remote, web app, or mobile app), students will need to create an iClicker Cloud account.
