Apporto

Overview

Apporto is a cloud-based virtual desktop environment that provides access to specialized software applications required for coursework. It enables students and instructors to access applications through a web browser without needing to install them on personal devices. This tool is particularly useful for accessing high-demand software that may be resource-intensive or platform-specific.

Apporto can be used for:

  • Virtual Labs: Providing students with remote access to software needed for lab work.

  • Course-Specific Tools: Ensuring equitable access to specialized tools regardless of the student's device or operating system.

  • Software Access: Provide students with access to course-required software without needing installations.
  • Customizable Desktops: Create virtual desktops tailored to the needs of a specific course or department.
  • Seamless Integration: Integrate with Canvas to provide students with a single sign-on experience.
  • Resource Monitoring: Track application usage and manage software licenses efficiently.
  • Remote Collaboration: Facilitate group work using shared desktop environments.
  • High-Speed Connectivity Needs: Requires a stable internet connection for smooth performance.
  • Advanced Local Computing Needs: May not support high-performance computing tasks like 3D rendering as effectively as local installations.
  • Software with Licensing Restrictions: Applications like Adobe Creative Cloud, which do not support virtualization, cannot be provided through Apporto.
  • Offline Access: Apporto does not support offline use.
  • Licensing Limitations: Access to specific software depends on instructional or departmental licensing agreements.
  • Virtual Labs: Use Apporto to set up virtual lab environments where students can access specialized software from any device.
  • Group Projects: Facilitate remote group collaboration using shared virtual desktops.
  • Resource-Intensive Applications: Provide access to high-demand software without requiring students to own high-performance devices.

Apporto’s cloud-based environment supports accessibility features:

  • Works across devices and operating systems, ensuring equitable access.

  • Screen readers and keyboard navigation supported within compatible applications.

  • Cloud storage enables easy file access and transfer.

Features

Apporto enables students to use specialized course software from any device with internet access, promoting flexibility and reducing barriers related to device performance or compatibility. Features include:

  • Cross-Device Compatibility: Access software via your Canvas site on any device (Windows, macOS, Chromebooks).

  • No Installation Required: Use high-demand software without installing it on personal devices.

  • Data Persistence: Save files securely in cloud storage integrated with the virtual desktop.

  • Equitable Access: Access the same tools as peers, regardless of device specifications.

  • Collaboration Tools: Work with classmates on group projects in shared environments.
