Canvas New Analytics
Canvas New Analytics
Overview
Canvas New Analytics allows instructors to leverage course data to gain a deeper understanding of student engagement and achievement across all devices, including Canvas mobile apps. Instructors can view reports on grades, assignments, attendance, and course activity/participation. They can compare course average grades with an individual assignment, course section, or student filter, and can send targeted messages based on grades or participation. Course settings for due dates, attendance, and engagement determine the reports that are available. Students do not have access to Canvas New Analytics.

Not Optimal For
Real time data: Data is refreshed for published courses in the New Analytics dashboard every 24 hours. Report data may be delayed by 24 hours; however, Course Activity Report data may be delayed by 40 hours.
Dealbreakers
May not work with large courses: The tool successfully loads a weight of 50,000 which is calculated by formula: # of Students * # of Assignments. According to Instructure, 99.7% of all courses have a weight of 50,000 or less.
Uses 3rd party cookies: In order for New Analytics to display in Canvas, third-party cookies may need to be enabled in your browser settings.
Not recommended for assessing students: Page view data should not be used to assess academic integrity. Because mobile page view data is based on device settings and network connection, it may vary from the time the page views actually occurred.
Does not display data for all tools in Canvas: Reported participation data is only for Canvas core tools (Announcements, Assignments, Collaborations, Discussions, Pages, Classic Quizzes). Student participation data using external tools, also called LTIs, is not supported or included in analytics.
Ways to Incorporate
Student activity overview: Use the analytics tool to get a quick overview of student activity in your course, such as page views, participation, and submission rates. This can help you identify students who may be disengaged or struggling. Example: Prof. Johnson in the History department uses the activity overview to check for students who haven’t accessed the course materials in a while.
Student performance tracking: Utilize the analytics tool to track individual student performance over time, monitoring their progress and identifying areas where they may need additional support or intervention. Example: Prof. Rodriguez in the Education department uses student performance tracking to identify struggling students and provide targeted tutoring resources.
