Create Accessible Digital Content

Introduction

Revisions to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title II require accessibility compliance for all digital content—including all Canvas content, web pages, word-processing documents, PDF files, images, videos, spreadsheets, and forms—by spring 2026. Your commitment to producing accessible learning materials helps ensure that all students will have equitable access to your course resources.

Getting Started

Create, check, and remediate your content using the following strategies:

  • Consider if your syllabus or other documents need to be PDF files. Could the content be shared on Canvas or a web page instead of remediating files?

  • Remove images that don’t add to the learning experience.

  • Use available resources that are already accessible.

  • Apply the Keep C.A.L.M. Campaign suggestions and resources when creating and updating your content. Learn more at tlos.vt.edu/calm.

  • Leverage the available accessibility checkers built into Microsoft 365 or tools like Ally and Grackle. Learn more at tlos.vt.edu/tools.

  • Apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to guide your content design. Learn more at tlos.vt.edu/udl.

  • Visit tlos.vt.edu/consultations to schedule an online meeting with a TLOS accessibility professional.

Training
